I am sick. I am tired. But I want to....

“I am really sick. I feel very tired. I am so lethargic today,” my wife said as soon as I entered the house.

“Oh! I am sorry. Let me make you some hot soup,” like a caring husband I asked.

“No. I don’t feel like eating anything,” she replied while yawning.

“Maybe you should go to bed,” like a good husband I suggested.

“No. I don’t want to sleep.”

“May be we can watch a chick flick in home theater,” knowing her taste for movies, I made another proposal.

“No. I cannot watch movie. I have headache too,” she replied.

Like an authority on maladies, my daughter interjected, “I think shopping will help.”

Suddenly my wife’s face brightened like a fluorescent lamp is turned on. All signs of dullness disappeared. Cheerful and happy face glowed and she announced, “Let us go shopping.”

It was my turn to say no, “How can you go shopping if you are sick?”

She replied, “In your car.”

“I can’t go shopping. I have to pack. You know I am flying to China tomorrow morning. Why don’t you go by yourself?”

“No. You have to drive. I am sick and not in a condition to drive.”

“It is raining cats and dogs. People don’t shop in this kind of weather.” I made another attempt to avoid going to shops.

“We will go to the mall. It is covered and car parking is underground.” She had perfect answer.

The idea of a trip to the mall with apparently unwell wife on a rainy day was not appealing and I asserted myself, “No. We are not going shopping. Period.”

“I always take good care of you.” She said with a very sweet voice. Emotional blackmail always works.

“Oh. Please don’t go there. I really don’t want to drive in this weather,” I replied.

“Remember when you broke you arm I drove you to all the doctors so many times.”

“That was almost a year back. I can drive you to the doctor if you are not well.”

Like a UN diplomat mediating India and Pakistan on Kashmir issue, my daughter said, “Shopping is a better option dad.”

“How is that?”

“Let us see pros and cons. With out of pocket expenses and medicines, you will still end up spending money and an hour wait with really sick people. And if we go to mall, we will spend money on something tangible. So going to mall is better.” My daughter presented a hard to counter argue reasoning.

“Okay. I give up. What do you want to buy anyway?”

“We will decide when we reach there.”

(Author’s note: - I will let my readers decide if it is fiction or fact and what we purchased.)

  1. That is a shrewd tactic. Some people get what they want by being polite. This tactic will work in any situation.

  4. I assume it is part fiction and part fact. Fiction in that it didn't happen today. Fact in that it happend some day.

As for what you bought or rather they bought, no clue... but would love to know. Mostly it may be window shopping and eating something at the mall, I guess.

  5. I forgot your note at the end. This is a true story. One of the few/many items you bought is from the food court.

  20. Love this post. I agree, with woman, shopping can cure them and brighten them. You have a smart daughter.
But I prefer to shop alone, without being rushed and interrupted. All I would need is my husband's card. And he gives it happily and unquestioningly.
It must be a true story.

  21. Along with a trange sense of logic, I'm sure all us women learn this at a young age that if you want something doing always let the man in your life believe it was his idea.

  22. YES This works with me too...a sort of tranquilliser..releases ur stresses and of corse a bug of "stress"for the viseversa:)

  23. I feel this is fiction written just to bring the point that ladies love to shop...but if woman is really down and physically sick then shopping is not going to help her cheer up...she would rather just rest at home and will be glad if given break from routine household chores.

Recession in America has given big set back to women's shopping craze...many times not shopping is more relaxing.

I like the way you put day to day family encounters. It is impressive to read that your daughter explains about medical scene in USA.

May be on one such occasions you went out to shop..either you purchased some very small item or ended up bringing home some big home decorating item.

  27. It sounds like your daughter should be a lawyer! I personally only like shopping if I don't need anything. If I'm shopping for something I need, I get very stressed!

  39. Hahaha ... ! Such a darling daughter you have. I think it is a little imagination from your part and a little bit truth. Though this would never happen to me. When I am sick I just want to sulk and be pampered with sweets and chocolates. I like to shop on my own no questions asked! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think it is quite true, but I might be mistaken :)) Amazing family that you have! You must be proud :))
I like your blog, I hope you're going to take the time to visit mine - I have a feeling you'll like it :)) Can't wait to hear from you and of course feel free to follow me anytime (if you like my blog of course :))! <3

  42. Dear All,

I am not replying to everyone individually as all of you have encouraged and provided similar feedback.

    I really appreciate that.

Thanks a lot for encouragement. It seems like we have consensus that most women like shopping. Of course it is the good times with family that we always remember.

Once again A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL :)))I ENJOYED READING YOUR COMMENTS AS MUCH AS I LIKED WRITING.

Story is a combination of facts and fiction but most factual. I changed some sequences. We ended up buying cloths for ALL OF US INCLUDING ME. My daughter and wife felt I needed some new shirts. I guess that was one the reason they wanted me to come.

    ReplyDelete
  43. first timer here.. good post :) I love shoppin too :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hehe, so basically the whole thing was a set-up to get you to go and buy some shirts? ; D

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Preeti,

    Thanks:)

    @Emily,

Not the whole thing. Just the part to drag me to the shops. Usually she likes to go alone...if can walk..can shop...simple strategy.
