India Fest

IMG_3095No, the picture on left is not from India but it definitely reminds street markets of Mumbai and Delhi. Confusion, congestion and chaos give an impression of India but it is an experience of India right here in Raleigh, North Carolina. While shopping and eating, the viewers supposedly enjoyed two day long live performances of locals and special performances by Indian Idol Sreeram. The music equipment in the shopping stalls is meant to rock the squeaking speakers in this sport stadium with atrocious acoustics.

Yes, the shopping stalls are in sports stadium with seating and a stage.

Performances included singing, classical, semi classical, Bhangra and Bollywood dances on new and old songs. Though children dominated most of the performances, some adults also showed their skills. Learning and in turn performing Indian dances provide good opportunity to children to realize some Indian culture. But this year, ultra modern ‘Shiela Ki Jawani’ and ‘Munni Badnam’ were also played on several dances.

India Idol Sreeram indeed stole the show with his mature, melodious, professional and trained singing. Unlike CD player and his companion Tia, Sreeram sounded perfect despite far from perfect speaker systems. May be it is his experience or his god gifted voice, India picked a deserving Indian Idol. Just like shining light, he has shining singing future.

I always love pictures of streets with lots of colourful shops displaying colourful clothing, toys or other knick knacks etc.
You are right all such places look the same, it could be anywhere from Mumbai,Delhi, Madras to Thailand.
I remember taking beautiful videos of the streets in Ajmer, which was so colourful.
Nice walk down the memory lane , thanks to your blog.

I know Shiela ki jawani, but not Munni badnam! That shows how much I am in touch with latest bollywood songs! I am off to listen to it now. Thanks for the lead :)

wow, lovely pics. I do agree -- congestion gives an impression of Indian markets, but my impression of the flea markets in US is one of equal congestion.
