Soul Searching to Search Soul

(This post is inspired by a discussion with a philosopher friend).

What is a soul? Does it really exist? How does it look like? How does it feel? Has anyone seen or experienced it?

Defining soul is not easy for an average person. Probably it is not easy for religious and spiritual scholars either. Most literatures imply soul as immortal self of a person or a living being. Socrates and Plato explained death as separation of soul from the body. Hinduism advocates the same describing human body as a mere physical shell or clothes for a soul.

Accepting an abstract, invisible, shapeless, formless and divine entity is hard for some but what further complicates this super natural phenomenon is individuality and yet uniformity of souls. Are all souls equal or some are superior to others? Is there a degree of purity associated with the souls? Some philosophers argue soul is God while the most important Hindu scripture Geeta states existence of God as well as souls. However both schools say that soul is pure. Soul is beyond and free from material greed, self indulgence, love, hate, emotions, pain, happiness, despair, relationship, ego or physical pleasure. And that makes souls homogeneous and yet different. A spiritual path to self realization may lead some to experience eternal bliss of soul but most of us will probably know it after leaving this world.

What do you think?

What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world yet forfeits his soul? Matthew 16:26

Our prime concern should be of our soul; nothing else truly matters in this temporary life.

The soul or our inner self by nature is sinful. The Lord Jesus Christ shed His blood and died on the cross to redeem our souls from sin and eternal death. By accepting Him we receive the eternal life.

This is what the Bible teaches us.

Not something I've ever thought too deeply about if I'm honest though I am convinced that if there is such a thing animals as well as humans will possess one.

I feel that soul is our conscious, we may keep it pure, intact or soil it..all depends on us.

I heard somewhere recently that inside us there are two wolves. One good and one bad. The quality of the soul depends on the wolf that you choose to feed more.

Soul can be interpretted in many ways.It could be the life force that we carry within our body. It could be our conscience; it could also be our conscious self. Purpose should be to lead a righteous life ,as we are blessed with intellect and thinking power. "Aham Brahmasmi..." of Hinduism runs counter to the biblical view of soul being a sinner and always requiring redemption !

Soul is an interesting concept, but it cannot be proved. The concept of multiple births is common with Hindus, but there is no way we can verify that (at least for now). As long as we cannot verify something, it is as good as non-existent (for me).
